Maru is a manual practice in furniture and lifestyle objects, focused on material essence. Rather than pursuing the uniformity of mass production, Maru allows space for the unique traces found in nature. It is a quiet effort to bring simplicity, sincerity, and natural presence into everyday life, creating pieces that are not only functional, but open to feeling and to time, that are made to last and to be lived with. Every piece is shaped by hand in the workshop. Each tree, each grain, each irregularity carries its own history and character. Objects are made and finished one at a time, as a continuation of a tradition in which each piece bears the hand of its maker, reflecting the intimate, personal relationship between craftsman and object once found in neighborhood carpentry culture.
Founded in Istanbul, Maru began when Ömer İşçimenler, who has a deep connection to nature, was introduced to his family’s carpenter in the Bebek neighborhood as he began developing an interest in carpentry. It was there that his path crossed with Harun, a third-generation master carpenter who has devoted his life to the craft. This encounter formed the foundation of Maru’s way of working.
